Is it time now for a new social contract?
There are many suggestions for reform in governmentââ¬â¢s relationship to the economy. As I had hinted in my earlier discourse, many of my recommendations deal with eliminating governmentââ¬â¢s intervention in economic activity. Thus, there needs to be a creation of a free market economy, independent of government influence as a means to stimulate economic enterprise toward more productivity and to restore the economy to a strong position. However, given the long history of government involvement, it is highly unlikely that such action is possible.I guess it is time for a new social contract. It seems that the policies and practices in the employment of relationships in America are no longer responsive to the needs of todayââ¬â¢s working families and society. There had been more emphasis on increased profits and productivity while the wages have remained the same, or worst, declined and stagnated for families. The irony is that people are working harder, but they do not belo ng among those who share in the gains from their efforts.Only a small percentage of the population is privileged to have that benefit, adding to the increasing inequality. The families are affected by these changes and one wonders what he can do in the face of these economic changes. The implicit social contract that encompasses work such as loyalty and hard work are not necessarily rewarded with fair and increasing wages. This has been blotted out by a norm where employers give center stage to stock price and even short-term gains, which are often at the expense of the workers who work hard daily. What we call the American Dream is usually the promise of riches and prosperity and a life that is well-lived.à This has been the ideal ever since that ensures one success in life so long as he is willing to sacrifice everything to work for it. It has been such an illusion for many. Thus the American dream has become a driving and motivating force for millions of people who flock to the ââ¬Å"Land of the Freeâ⬠because they want to escape the poverty in their countries. They think that their only option viable to them is to move to a country that promises them success, wealth, freedom from material prosperity.à à However, even though this is oftentimes true for the people who really do work hard for the dream, the American Dream must not be promoted as it is. The reason here is because it shifts the focus from the true values that count in the family to the material wealth and greed that entices people to come work in a land of opportunities which may otherwise not turn out to be so (The American Dream).I remember Walt Whitmanââ¬â¢s poem I Hear America Singing where there is the sense of each one seeking his own personal niche in the land of promises as seen in the following lines:ââ¬Å"Each singing what belongs to him or her and to none else, The day what belongs to the dayââ¬âat night the party of young fellows, robust, friendly, Singing with o pen mouths their strong melodious songs.â⬠(I Hear America Singing). It almost captures that desire as one reads the entire work and is very descriptivethat the future belongs to the young and those who are open to opportunities. For the people who leave their country of origin, there is a substantial tradeoff for embracing the American Dream. Behind the veil of power and comparative material wealth that is promised to every individual, there is a significant loss that one must encounter. And that loss is the loss of traditional culture. In the essay by MSNBC columnist Eric Liu, he states that during one of his dinner meals at a friendââ¬â¢s house: ââ¬Å"The more time I spent in their midst, the more I learned to be like them.To make their everyday idioms and idiosyncrasies familiar. To possess them.â⬠This particular longing to assimilate all of the ââ¬Å"everyday idioms and idiosyncrasiesâ⬠of the American culture was brought about not by curiosity or a certain z eal for knowledge. This particular longing was fueled by negative emotions. This passion for learning the ropes of American culture was born out of the longing of the desire to fit in.The American Dream may be able to provide a person the necessary wealth that one could only dream about in his native country but it also takes away the immaterial liberties that come from being rooted in a different culture. This is what is seen in Tony Went to the Bodega But He Didnââ¬â¢t Buy Anything. Because the person sat at the doorway and saw people come and go, his being in that position depicted a life of leisure which one thinks could be achieved if he pursues the American Dream. One does not know that there is an illusion to this since one may never attain this goal by just going to a place and hoping that oneââ¬â¢s station in life is guaranteed to be easy. The American Dream will always be a Utopian dream until people realize that material wealth is not the only path for success and ha ppiness. This is seen in the lines,Tony went to the bodega, But he didnââ¬â¢t buy anything: He sat by the doorway satisfied To watch la gente (people Island-brown as him). Crowd in and out, (Tony Went to the Bodega But He Didnââ¬â¢t Buy Anything). The American Dream promises people from all walks of life and all countries of origin that within this land, there is freedom from oppression, freedom from poverty and material wealth but for other people, it will only remain a dream for them. As Langston Hughes remarks, ââ¬Å"I am the people, humble, hungry, meanââ¬âHungry yet today despite the dream.â⬠à There have been casualties during this fight for the American Dream. Several people have risked leaving their homelands in search of a bright future in the United States yet there are millions today on relief and people are still being persecuted and discriminated. The land of the free is still a land of oppression and even though people would like to view it as a land of opportunity, it becomes more like a land ofà deception and false hopes. Hughes ends his poem with both a revelation of what America has come to be as well an exhortation to the people to make America what is should have been. He says: ââ¬Å"The mountains and the endless plainââ¬âAll, all the stretch of these great green statesââ¬âAnd make America again! (Hughes, 1938).Being optimistic about the dynamic forces of globalization and the practical applications of corporate social responsibilities sweeping multinational and large national organizations, I still believe that there is a balanced solution in multinationalââ¬â¢s outsourcing of resources and less developed countriesââ¬â¢ mutual advantage from this economic relationship. It is the primary duty of the national governments to uphold their sovereignty and protect their natural resources, especially their human resource or labor from being corrupted by foreign companies. They must uphold their constitution and by laws and promote more economic and bilateral policies to protect their people and resources at the same time harness their economic potential for the nationââ¬â¢s own advantage, growth and development.à They must dictate the terms for which their resources will be used, taking into consideration the growth and comparative advantage of their people and the extinction of their natural resources and habitat. The notion about hiring local managers and staff is preliminary. Of paramount importance is the question of how and in what terms they will allow the multinationals to exhaust their most important resources and capital. In effect, the dream that once tugged at peopleââ¬â¢s hearts never really existed in the first place. The dream that made people leave their homelands only remain a dream because there are people who still have not ââ¬Å"made itâ⬠in America. There is something amiss in the ruckus that is about the American Dream. On one side, the American Dream remai ns a dream where the corruption and the apathy of people continues to prevent it from coming true while on the other side, the American Dream comes with too high a price. It asks for the individualââ¬â¢s culture, it torments the person and convinces him into thinking that if you do not assimilate the American culture, you will never make it.Given the importance of our work in our daily lives, our policies and institutions need to provide decent benefits and the opportunity to use oneââ¬â¢s abilities to the maximum. Consistent with our nationââ¬â¢s democratic principles, all Americans must possess a freedom to voice out their opinions and be treated fairly. This just means that we value a balance between the interests of the employers and shareholders and the interests of the family.ReferencesThe American Dream. Transport Network
Transportation and Logistics Goals Amanda Contreras November 16, 2012 640 The central goal of my company is to keep retail prices low. Working with suppliers to ensure their prices are constantly low, but also means price changes are kept to a minimum. Aiming to become lowest cost producer, the firm can compete on the price with every other industries and earn higher unit profits. Cost reduction provides the focus of the organization strategy. It targets a broad market.Competitive advantage is achieved by driving down costs. Price Leadership ââ¬â The Company is well known for its ââ¬Å"Every Day Low Pricingâ⬠, but is aiming to give the consumer greater value for each product category. Through leverage selling general and administrative expenses, the Company can ask suppliers to introduce efficiencies in the transportation of items. This can be the supplier to the distribution center, distribution center to the store and also within the store.Since transportation can be as m uch as one-half to two-thirds of the total cost of distributing product it only makes sense to drive is in as many efficiencies into your transportation network as you possibly can. The 1st strategy is to limit the margin that would have to be paid to a third-party providing that service. The 2nd strategy is controlling the fleet my company can control the quality and timing of the service to move the freight from the distribution centers to the stores. That 2nd strategy is an important goal in reducing labor costs and maximizing the utilization of assets and resources. Currently, the vendor manages nearly all vendor shipments to my company. My company arranges backhaul pick-ups at vendors after one of its trucks makes a delivery to its stores. More stock will be needed prior to the seasonal upturn in sales volume. As sales decline, less merchandise is needed. My company balances the ââ¬Å"need for speedâ⬠with the costs inherent in the mode of transport. This includes the rate charged for the service, minimum weight requirements, loading and unloading facilities, packaging, possible damage in transit, and any special services that may be required. The basic modes of transportation are water, rail, motor carrier, air and pipeline. Water being the slowest mode with rail, motor carrier, and air following in order of speed of delivery. Generally, the order is reversed when looking at costs. Selection of the appropriate carrier has several steps. First the firm selects a transportation mode. The shipper must compare the service desired with the rate or cost of service. Service usually means transit time or the time that elapses from the time the consignor makes the goods available for dispatch until the carrier delivers to the consignee. Once the mode and type of carrier is determined a final decision can be made based on other factors. Accessibility is one such factor. Some firms have geographic limits to their routing network. Others may not possess physical access to needed facilities or have the ability to provide the equipment and facilities that movement of a particular commodity may require.Reliability, the consistency of the transit time a carrier provides, is also a key factor. Finally, convenience and communication are other important considerations when selecting a carrier. Measures that a transportation firm would use to judge its performance include: orders shipped on time, orders shipped complete, order preparation time, product availability, and transit time. From the customer perspective performance can be gauged from orders received on time, orders received complete, orders received damage free, orders filled accurately, and orders billed accurately.

How Technology Has Changed America And Its Views - 2100 Words
Within the past few decades, technology has completely transformed. The height and talent of todayââ¬â¢s technology has completely changed America and its views. Technology has completely changed and expanded over the past 20 years. Within the past decade a new form of editing technology was created, and that technology is Photoshop. Photoshop is a software used to alter images. In todays day and age, photoshop has become the norm. It is everywhere and it cannot be escaped. Photoshop is used on everything and everyone, and it is affecting us at an extremely negative rate. Due to the works of Photoshop being used on every single media platform, society has adapted to the perfection in photos that were altered by Photoshop. What the world sees when they look at a photoshopped picture is what a company views as perfection, and this image creates an unhealthy comparison between the viewer, the image, and those around them. With Photoshop, images are altered beyond recognition. The Ph otoshop software takes away any blemish and flaw, and it can make the model used in the photo unrealistically thin, and by this it creates an unachievable body image. When these images are viewed by society, they only see the photo, and they donââ¬â¢t see the hours and hours spent altering the image to actually make them appear this way. So, when society, especially young children and young adults, see these insanely altered images they see something that isnââ¬â¢t real. LAY CONCEPTS OF HEALTH Free Essay Example, 1000 words
Particularly, Herzlich (1973) discovered that lay people linked illness and health to lifestyle: the participants shared the belief that stress, fatigue, and other adverse tensions associated with urban living could either exacerbate an illness caused by other factors or generate an illness on their own. Based on this finding Herzlich (1973) justified the lay concept of duality of health. According to that concept, health is an endogenous (within a person) thing maintaining of which requires constant struggle against a variety of exogenous (external) factors that cause illness. A series of subsequent studies further explored the links revealed by Herzlich (1973) across a range of ages, sexes, occupations, social classes, cultural backgrounds and other variables to discover the most essential features of lay beliefs about health and illness. Most of these studies exposed the variation between lay perception of health and illness and direct social and material conditions of participants. The origins of lay conceptions of health were also identified. These findings were brilliantly summarized by Stacey (1988) in the following statement: ââ¬Å"Ordinary people develop explanatory theories to account for their material, social and bodily circumstances. We will write a custom essay sample on LAY CONCEPTS OF HEALTH or any topic specifically for you Only $17.96 $11.86/pageorder now These they apply to themselves as individuals, but in developing them they draw on all sorts of knowledge and wisdom, some of it derived from their own experience, some of it handed on by word of mouth, other parts of it derived from highly trained practitioners. Thus lay explanations go beyond common sense, in that explanations beyond the immediately obvious are includedâ⬠(p. 142). Perception of health as functional capacity is also a common characteristic of lay health beliefs (Blaxter, 2004). Lay people treat ââ¬Ëgood healthââ¬â¢ as the ability to normally fulfill the duties inherent in their social and/or economic roles. This means that health may be perceived as the absence of illness on the one hand and as the ability to successfully cope with oneââ¬â¢s duties despite illness. Such concept of health is predominantly shared by representatives of the middle class and the elderly who, therefore, viewed health as a sort of reserve e nabling them to cope with illnesses. By contrast, those people who have poor health are less likely to adopt the functional conception of health (Blaxter, 2004). The notion of so-called ââ¬Ëcandidacyââ¬â¢ is an important feature of lay health concept. This notion is used by lay persons to explain relative risk of illness and effectiveness of preventive behaviours.

Technology And Technology - 1218 Words
Technology may sound like a modern and futuristic term, but it has existed as long as innovation has existed. A cave man using a stone to grind up wheat is just as much an application of technology as Teslaââ¬â¢s implementation of self driving cars. The invention and utilization of the wheel is as technological as the invention of the smartphone. Every type of innovation and invention can be traced back to a point in time where someone saw a way to apply their knowledge to something. According to Websterââ¬â¢s Dictionary, the definition of technology is the practical application of knowledge especially in a particular area. For the longest time I always thought of technology as strictly being associated with electronics. Thatââ¬â¢s before I actuallyâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦While technology can play a beneficial role in the way it affects our society, there are also some aspects of innovation that have a negative effect on our well being. Innovator and inventor, Alfred Nobel was a swedish man who specialized in construction. You may know him by his last name which is used for one of the most prestigious awards on our planet. Most people donââ¬â¢t know why this man decide to create this peace prize, but the answer to that is how he used technology. Nobel found out that by mixing two certain chemicals together he could create, you guessed it, dynomite. This was a great thing for Nobel as his company was essentially based on construction and dynamite really helped out when things needed to be blown up. The only problem with this was it was quickly used as a weapon and took many lives, especially in that time era. So Nobel decided to create the peace prize to balance out the damage he inflicted on our society. Some people may argue whether or not this is a good example of ââ¬Ëtechnology gone badââ¬â¢, but it just goes to show that innovation and advancements could have negative side effects. Current Issues Or Challenges Faced By Resort-Myassignmenthelp.Com
Question: Discuss About The Current Issues Or Challenges Faced By Resort? Answer: Introduction This study deals with analyzing the current issues or challenges faced by resort and spa industry in and across Australia (Zeng and Gerritsen 2014). In this particular assignment, proper emphasis has been given on understanding each of the issues in detail and providing proper recommendations at the same time. The current segment elucidates emerging trends or future opportunities in resort and spa industry. One of the key insights that had been noted in the study is increase growth rate in resort and spa industry. This industry faces increased competition as compared to other sectors. There are various reasons for increased competition in resort and spa industry (Vila, Darcy and Gonzlez 2015). A majority of resort and spa business attribute industry growth that links with growing foodie culture captivating Australians. Other factors that are mentioned in the study are promoting a growth in competition that is local population growth as well as higher consumer demand. The growth in re sort and spa industry and increased competition could be a contributing factor in the hospitality business that has the ability to attract as well as retaining customers. Tourism is one of the sources of income for Australia and continues to grow in terms of scale as well as scope (Wirahardja, Turner and Richardson 2016). There is significant rise in resort and spa industry development over few past decades as it is one of the most social, cultural phenomenon and economic factors in Australia. Current issues or challenges that affect Resort and Spa Industry in Australia The resort and spa industry is booming but research shows that there are still lots of factors that limit the success of Australian hospitality business. (Wirahardja, Turner and Richardson 2016). This industry need to recruit for entry level position that is easy to recruit when the recruiter outline the career path as well as point the mangers the key responsibilities for the line position. Australia and many other nations believe in offering guest worker programs that recruit seasonal workers for a period of 10 months. Resort and spa industry is a labor intensive business as well as automation opportunities that are limited by nature. It needs to reconfigure work process and then sharing the benefits of increased productivity that can have positive results (Vila, Darcy and Gonzlez 2015). Both cross-training as well as cross-utilization are nowhere a new concept but they are good one. Here, employees are expected to master the skills for their own positions but receive pay rise when they have become certified in other jobs. The employees who are trained can fill in the place wherever needed by the industry during peak times and have their own horizons through cross departmental training. In recent business environment, operators are finding ways for competing with the workers as hard as they compete with the customers (Smith and Puczk 2014). It is important to develop a positive work environment with real opportunities for advancement as well as combined with creative strategies for recruiting and improving employee productivity that increases the essential skills where the workforce continues to shrink in the near future. With the emergence of technology, the resort and spa industry is able to grow in the present environment where people are aware of the services any resort provides. Online booking as well as mobile applications should be used by resort companies (Smith and Puczk 2014). Use of these applications will enable the guests to leave digital footprints and get accessed to data for targeted promotions as well as individualized messaging. Paradise Lost Censorship and Hypocrisy free essay sample
I love movies. I especially adore those films with an artistic, literary quality that is timeless and classical. In my experience, Italian movies seldom fail to evoke such feelings in me, and Cinema Paradiso was no disappointment. This heartwarming story about a little boyââ¬â¢s love affair with movies, and his subsequent coming-of-age in the repressive environment of ecclesiastical censorship and hypocrisy stirred great emotion in me, as I expected it would. The young Toto made me feel his awe as he attempted to see the forbidden film images hidden from him by his friend Alfredo at the behest of the town priest. The issue of censorship ran deep throughout the film. I believe censorship can actually provide a valid function in a community in some circumstances and situations, such as the protection of children from harmful imagery, literature or speech. Pornography, for example, can and should have its availability limited only to consenting adults. As a staunch civil libertarian, I have always believed that communities should set their own standards on censorship as much as possible. However as Rosenblatt (2002) points out in his persuasive essay about Cinema Paradiso, without the neutral and objective oversight of outsiders ââ¬â such as the United States Supreme Court ââ¬â even well-intentioned censorship can become repressive. Even in the movie, little Totoââ¬â¢s friend Alfredo felt that the local priestââ¬â¢s strictures were repressive. He told Toto, ââ¬Å"You leave [the village] or you will never find your life in so narrow-minded a place. â⬠The priestââ¬â¢s attempts to protect the town from moviesââ¬â¢ love scenes were presented in a comical manner in the film, and certainly they were ridiculous, but not only for the way the scenes were produced. The censorship struck me as hypocritical and nonsensical if viewed as necessary to protect the morality of the community. For example, very early in the film we see young Toto stealing peeks into Alfredoââ¬â¢s projection booth. The boy sees many of the very scenes he is not supposed to be seeing. Later, he views by candlelight some of the frames the censor/priest demanded Alfredo remove from the films. But Toto does this in full view of his mother who seems more concerned with the fire hazard Toto creates than in his viewing of forbidden imagery. Clearly the priestââ¬â¢s attempts to protect Toto from the sordid scenes were ineffective. In at least one place in Cinema Paradiso, the omitted kiss scene was followed immediately by violent slapstick comedy. The teacher at Totoââ¬â¢s school severely beat and emotionally abused a young man named Boccia because he was poor at math. Totoââ¬â¢s mother physically abused Toto when she discovered he had spent the milk money on movies. In both cases, it seemed that no one had any problem with physical violence, even against children. Frequently in the movie several men in the audience laughed and jeered at the missing love scenes in the movies they were watching, knowing exactly what was missing from the film. It struck me as hypocritical that a community would see fit to strike scenes of love ââ¬â kissing ââ¬â from movies (even though everyone knew exactly what was being struck) while having no problem with actual physical violence. Lastly, I found it hypocritical that this townââ¬â¢s people would publicly vilify a family for being nominally ââ¬Å"Stalinistâ⬠or ââ¬Å"Communistâ⬠while ignoring the actual Stalin-esque repression in their midst. The scene in which the people wanted very much to see the movie playing at the Cinema Paradiso, but were turned away, was a good example of this. The filmmakers clearly wanted to portray the inappropriateness of the townââ¬â¢s hypocritical censorship and repression because they gave us such powerfully symbolic clues. As a result of Alfredoââ¬â¢s defiant act of projecting the movie into the street for the people, he inadvertently started a fire that burned down the old theater and cost him his sight. The man who defied the censorship of the town, symbolized by the refusal of the cinemaââ¬â¢s owners to allow people in the street to see the film, and who provided them the vision of the movie (and Totoââ¬â¢s vision of becoming a filmmaker) ââ¬â lost his vision. And his vision he lost in a fire, an intense symbol of purging, repression, or censorship.
