Should Marijuana Be Legalized - 1118 Words
The unjust imprisonment of American citizens with over-exaggerated jail sentences (pertaining to marijuana charges) is a very big problem in the US. I chose this topic because I had heard so many horror stories of people being sentenced at least 9-10 years on marijuana possession charges just to fill prisons, and it made me extremely upset. What angered me even more was the proof of racially motivated arrests/sentencing in many instances of unjust marijuana related arrests. While these people were ââ¬Å"bustedâ⬠for carrying marijuana and subsequently jailed for decades, rapists get out in 8-9 years on average (Sex Offender Attorney). Even more outrageous, almost all those charged with marijuana possession are sentenced/punished, while only 3 ofâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦History of Marijuana Prohibition in the US The prohibition of marijuana in the United States of America (coined by many as an essential part of the ââ¬Å"War on Drugsâ⬠) has ultimately shown itself to be a self-destructing mission, led by ultra-conservative political leaders unaware of the opinions of the people theyââ¬â¢ve been elected to represent. The situation we find ourselves faced with today seems like deja vu to many, as the governmentââ¬â¢s attempts to control the recreational use of marijuana reminds people of the Alcohol Prohibition from 1920-1933, known as ââ¬Å"the noble experiment.â⬠(Thornton) Both the prohibition of alcohol and the prohibition of marijuana have very similar traits, and these traits are evidence of just how ineffective the criminalization of marijuana is. The national alcohol prohibition was undertaken to reduce crime and corruption, solve social problems, reduce the tax burden created by prisons and poorhouses, and improve health and hygiene in America. The results of that ââ¬Å"experimentâ⬠clearly indicate that it was a miserable failure on all counts. Although consumption of alcohol fell at the beginning of Prohibition, it su bsequently increased by the end of 1933 (Thornton). Alcohol became more dangerous to consume (as

Conclusion Notes References Acknowledgement [Abstract] it is acknowledged that people have always been attaching much significance to the English study on account of the globalization trend of the world to the importance of language communication. Although many people are learning English, it does not mean that every person is certain to have good command of English. Iââ¬â¢m no exception too. We will write a custom essay sample on My English study or any similar topic only for you Order Now This paper is concerned about my English study in three stages?in middle school, in high school and at the university. Meanwhile, this paper also gives detailed discussions about the factors: English pronunciation, Autonomous learning ability, English learning motivations and the influence of personal attitudes towards English study. Key Words] Pronunciation; Autonomous learning; Learning motivations; Personal attitudes Economical and technological advances have tremendous impact on our ways of communication. Moreover, the globalization trend of the world also indicates the importance of language communication. Therefore, English, as a widely used foreign language, has been always meeting with great popularity. However, it is notable that not every person is doomed to have good command of English. Iââ¬â¢m no exception too. I have gone through three stages in the process of English study, which are filled with airdrops and happiness actually. It is acknowledged that English pronunciation is essential for every English learner who expects to have a good command of English. However, it is by no means easy. Pronunciation is closely related to the study of vocabulary, listening and so on. To correctly command English phonetic symbols, a learner must not only precisely grasp the articulation of a word and Judge its meanings, but also memorize new words flexibly. The former situation was that not only many students but the teachers themselves in middle school were not truly showing solicitude for the phonetic ours. When I was in middle school, I could remember being taught the phonetics only once. Later on, I had to learn by myself. Therefore, it has been no easy Job for me to clearly make distinction between English and Chinese in the Phonemic and phonological pronunciation. Besides, I do not completely correct my English pronunciation until now. 1. 1. 1 Phonemic and phonological distinction between English and Chinese Wan Shining (2004) argues the Chinese belongs to the oriented phylum, whereas English is an occidental one, and that the two languages share many similarities as ell as large divergences both phonemically and phonologically; their Phonetic system are distinct from each other mainly following by three aspects: (1) absolutely. The vowels and consonants in English differentiate from the tones (shunned) and the finals (yummy) in Chinese to a large extent even if they seem to be similar with their counterparts in pronunciation. (2) The ways of distinguishing meanings. Chinese distinguishes by tones, thus labeled as ââ¬Å"tonal languageâ⬠,@while English distinguishes meaning by the intonations of a sentence. Therefore, it named s ââ¬Å"language with intonationâ⬠(3) Phonemic structure. The phonemes, which are restricted in the latter, are able t be combined freely in the former. Take spelling rules of the consonant for example. In English, [f] and [h] can be spelled together with which is not allowed in Chinese. Besides, all the consonants in English can come at the end of a syllable, while in Chinese only [n] and [Eng] are permitted. These differences cause great difficulties for the Chinese students in their acquisition of English pronunciation. Another difficulty for them is that the two languages differ in rhythms as well. Each possesses its characteristics on applying on tone or place of stress to distinguish the wordââ¬â¢s meaning, and on the conveying a speaker tone or attitudes by means of various intonations. 1] @ Besides, there exist any other difficulties. 1. 1. 2 The transfer of mother tongue Chin Ling holds that the influence of the mother tongue on the foreign language learning is mainly illustrated on the course of ââ¬Å"transferâ⬠between external and internal languages. External language refers too language which a person utters in his daily talks, while the internal language refer s to a language which a person utilizes when thinking with his brain instead of speaking it out. Both languages serve as materials, basis as well as tools for thinking activity. A person is used applying his mother tongue or native dialect as his internal language at the beginning of learning a foreign language. Nevertheless, he may be forced to use external language that is understandable for both interlocutors in real communications. As a result, a problem arises in that external language is different from internal language. Consequently, the differences will produce the ââ¬Å"negative transferâ⬠. @The greater the preference is, the greater the difficulty is. [2] Totally speaking, I was tired of English study in view of these difficulties during that time. 1. 2 Difficulties of inaccurate memory of English vocabulary. As we all know, vocabulary is vital for Chinese English learner, especially for the middle school students. Because only in this stage can we have a specific idea of the English. When I was in middle school, my English teacher would teach students many vocabularies every single day that we could not memory in one night. Gradually, I ran into many difficulties in English study. Recently, I read a paper with respect to the study of vocabulary learning in middle school. The author said,â⬠The appearance of such difficulties is because the burden of English learning, the compulsory learning mode and the lacking of vocabulary learning strategies. [3]Len order to verify his assumptions, the author did experiment among the students in are divided into two classes. They are comparative class and experimental class. During the experiment, they used the old and direct vocabulary teaching mode in the former and the associative vocabulary teaching in the latter. Finally, the date shows hat after 12-week training in vocabulary learning strategy, the students of the experimental class improved their vocabulary learning ability, which is higher than that in the comparative class. The survey showed that if the students who are to meet the requirement of teacher and confine the vocabulary memory to the word lists, are proved to be less active. You read "My English study" in category "Papers" By comparing my English study in middle school, I thought those phenomena are also occurred on me. 2. The second acquaintance with English in high school?enthusiasm of English study Fortunately, these obstacles had not accompanied me into high school. I met excellent teachers, then grasped the method of English learning and finally set a goal for me. 2. 1 The improvement of English autonomous learning ability English teaching is not simply to teach students knowledge. The most important thing is to develop their autonomous learning ability through teaching activities. My English teacher gave me a lot of help. Her guidance in the process of my English study aroused my great interest in English. My English teacher tried to progress from traditional teacher-centered teaching to the student-centered method. She liked to cultivate our independent learning ability. She inspired us to interact with her, proposed to audaciously ask questions and let us to do English presentations in open forms. Thanks to my dear English teacher, I regained the enthusiasm about English learning. Admittedly, it is essential for the students to have teacherââ¬â¢s innovative guideline. The American psychologist Moscow believes that this is the best way to encourage students to express their opinion and foster their enthusiasm to learn the knowledge and build the formation of healthy personality by establishing the sincere mutual understanding teacher-student relationship. The reason for why I could become enthusiastic about English study was not only owing to my teacherââ¬â¢s help, but also the changing of my English learning method. The reason for why I could improve my English is as follows: Firstly, grasp teacherââ¬â¢s lecture feature and the characteristics of the various disciplines. Secondly, review and prepare for new knowledge. Thirdly, interact with teacher in class. Gradually, I found that my English scored higher than the previous. Until now, I am deeply aware of the importance of independent learning. As a Chinese saying goes, ââ¬Å"give man a sis, he will have a meal; teach him to fish, he will have the food all his life. â⬠focuses on studentsââ¬â¢ subjectivity and initiative in order to make students how to study and achieve life-long learning and development. And it is not the one side of my story. It has already been studied by others. The concept of ââ¬Å"autonomous learningâ⬠(Holes) ($) originated in the asses. He expresses, ââ¬Å"English as a conceptual tool which further developed its definition. â⬠[4] Benson and Evolve believe, ââ¬Å"autonomous learning is not only the freedom of learning, but a good opportunity to form independent thinking ability as adult. [5] Little believes that the essence of the ââ¬Å"autonomous learningâ⬠is a kind of ability such as ââ¬Å"independent, critical reflection and decision-making. [6] Learners need to arouse their awareness of what to learn and how to learn. Also American futurist Alvin-Toffee once said,â⬠The illiteracy in the future is not the one who donââ¬â¢t know the word, but the one who do not know how to learn. â⬠In addition to the previous factors, learning motivation is proved to be the essential factor. Motivation is the prime power of all activities. In the process of learning, many psychological factors can convert into the inner motivation, including interest, values and so on. As Www Heping@said in his A Review of research on foreign language Learnerââ¬â¢s motivation. Motivation@can Arouse appropriate learning deeds, it can make students go into learning state and learn English initiative. â⬠[7] I can not agree with his idea any more. When I was in high school, I still remembered that even a little achievement could take me great motivation. And this motivation accompanied me to go to university. 3. The third acquaintance with English at the university?passiveness of English After I come into university, I find that I become less positive towards English earning than ever before. And the reasons are as follows: A study of engineering students in Yemen by Taft AY-Tamil Candy Minor Squib cited previous research that found two classes of motivation for learning English: instrumental and integrative orientation. A person, who learns the language in hopes of gaining some tangible benefit, such as success in a Job or fulfilling an academic requirement, is instrumentally motivated. A person with integrative motivation learns English because he or she wishes to learn more about the culture of the Western world or become more integrated into English-speaking society. ] And I belong to the former. I learn the English in order to regard it as a tool for my future occupation. 3. 1 Personal attitudes towards English study determined by his attitudes towards the other group in particular and by his orientation towards the learning task itself. And I totally agree with it. â⬠[9] A positive attitude toward learning the English language is one of the leading predictors of success in gaining fluency. However, as mentioned above, I am not truly love English, but regard it as a tool of getting a Job. During this stage, my English study doe not make much progress. In the above paragraphs, I have made detailed explanation about my three stages of English study. From this paper, people can see that if one wants to get a good command of English, he must perfectly grasp these aspects: have a series of learning methods, take positive attitude toward English (namely the understanding of autonomous English learning) and pay particular attention to the pronunciation of English. Besides, the external factors are also of great importance such as the teacherââ¬â¢s teaching methods, the environment that people are situated in and so on. As for me, my English study does not do a good Job. No matter what stage do you belong to, I believe that this paper can be beneficial to your English study. Serve to distinguish one utterance from another in a language or dialect. @Tonal language: A tonal language is a language in which pitch is used as a part of speech, changing the meaning of a word. An example of how tone can change the meaning of a word can be found in English: the word ââ¬Å"presentâ⬠can be used as a verb or a noun, with a stress on the first or second syllable changing the meaning. In tonal languages, the way in which you say a word is very important, as it radically hinges the meaning. Tonal languages are found primarily in Asia, Africa, and South America. @alienation: Intonation is a word used to refer to how a sentence sounds. How a sentence sounds if itââ¬â¢s a question sounds different from how a sentence sounds if itââ¬â¢s a statement @Negative transfer: Negative transfer is a situation where a person transfers old learning and knowledge to a new situation, and the old information interferes with new information acquisition and task performance. This can be inconvenient or dangerous, depending on the type of situation involved. How to cite My English study, Papers

Response to Euro Crisis
Question: Describe about the response to the major financial crisis that took place in European Union region? Answer: Response to Euro Crisis In response to the major financial crisis that took place in European Union region, both the banking system and the supervisory structure of the region took stern measures to put in corrective checks. However it can be debated whether the measures were adequate and what more or different could have been done in the prevailing situation. The debt crisis exposed structural weakness in some of the countries of the region, primary being the unsustainable levels of both public and private debt. The financial crisis was also able to expose the systematic shortcomings in the detailed architecture of the monetary and economic union in the region. National Governments of the region along with institutions took slew of measures to safeguard the financial stability and also to strengthen the architecture of the institutions (Arezki, 2011). The complexity of financial integration in the Euro zone and the significance of the same cannot be decoded without understanding the complex structure on which the Euro zone is standing. The establishment of the single currency in the region followed by the Governance structure leads to formation of contagion on the whole region even if the small part of the whole region is making trouble (Ruffert, 2011). Capital markets and reactions on release of financial statement Capital market reactions are one of the major indicators, but it is a not the right place to play with. It is a secondary market and hence will react to any information released by the company be it financial performance or details about accounting policies. Announcements which are perceived to maximize shareholders value is considered to be positive and hence share price rise, however announcements which erodes shareholders value tend to have negative impact on the stock prices. However it is not in the interest of the company to twinkle with such informations to gain returns in the stock market as it is against the CPA code of conduct. Information about the organization should be presented as is to the shareholders and the transparency in the system is considered to be of prime importance. The structure of The European Union and its banking structure is based on the framework that each member country will support the existence of the other in times of crisis. However in the current situation countries like Germany which have healthy GDP to debt ratio are financing the needs of country like Greece and Spain which are struggling in the region. This has led to rise of the question whether the structure is good enough to survive the down time. References: Crown Vs Clarke. (1927). Spanish Settlements and New England Colonies - 17th Century free essay sample
The Spanish began exploring America with ââ¬Å"gold, glory and Godâ⬠large in their minds. Cortes and the other conquistadors had conquered the empires of the South and Central Americas, but Spain wanted more. The Spanish explorers heard of great riches and cities built of gold northward, so that is where they headed, eventually arriving at what is now the southwest portion of the USA. The other Spanish goal was to convert the Native Americans to Catholicism. The British on the other hand, went to settle in New England to escape the religious persecution that they had to withstand in Europe. They came to America to be able to worship their gods in the manner of their choosing, and not in the way that their king or government decided they had to. Another reason they came to New England was because of the lack of jobs in Britain. So while both Spain and England came to America partly to gain riches, England wasnââ¬â¢t as blinded by gold as Spain was. They wanted to focus on converting the ââ¬Å"savagesâ⬠and stealing their gold and riches and getting back home to Spain. The English wanted to make a new home, though at this point they still considered themselves to be under the British crown, and had no aspirations to make their own country. Their reasons for coming to America were not all that set them apart however. They also had a completely different basis for economy. The Spanish bringing back as much material wealth as was possible to Spain to enhance the prominence and stature of their native land. England made their money by relying on manufacturing. They did exceptionally in the lumber, shipbuilding, fishing and whaling industries. The colonies were able to rade with England and other countries, and had amazingly strong economic development. Because the Spanish focus entirely on their materialistic holdings, their economy was nowhere near as strong as the coloniesââ¬â¢ was. In the instance of economy, England was undoubtedly the prevailing country. The two countries also contrasted politically. The political system in the Spanish settleme nts was exclusively aristocratic. Spanish rulers controlled what went on in the New World and the settlements had little self-government. The people actually living in the settlements had to be the elite to be able to have any influence at all. The pureblood Spaniards were on the top of the social ladder and they had the most authority. The ââ¬Å"half-breedsâ⬠who were a mix of Spanish and Native American were on the lowest rung of the ladder and had little or even no say in what went on. Though the New England colonies were still under the British crown and itââ¬â¢s rule, they had self-government to a large extent. Most of the colonies had a governor and some sort of representative assembly that were chosen by popular vote. Though the only people that could vote were white, male landowners, this was already a step towards the democracy we have today. The Spanish and the British also had different relations with the Native Americans that were there before them. The two countries went about dealing with the natives in dissimilar ways. The Spanish began to take advantage of the Native Americans. They looted their villages to extract as much gold and wealth as was possible from them. They exploited the natives and soon began to use them for manual labor on their land. The English had mixed relations with the Native Americans. Occasionally there was peace and intermittently there was skirmishing going on between the two groups of people. The colonists could not however enslave the natives as the Spanish did because they caught diseases and died too quickly. Instead they preferred to use indentured white servants that needed to pay off their passage to America black slaves captured and brought over from Africa to do their bidding. As you can see, even though Spain and Great Britain came to settle in America in the same century, living on different sides of the country and having different ideals caused their lives and settlements to go in completely separate directions. Their experiences showed how differently things could go with just a few distinctive factors in place.

The Killer Clown, John Wayne Gacy essays
The Killer Clown, John Wayne Gacy essays Robert Hare is North America's most renowned academic on psychopaths. Utilizing the basis of the components of Hare's theory and his "Psychopath Checklist (PCL) which was later revised to the PCL-R" (Wikipedia, 2013, Hare), it is possible to analyze John Wayne Gacy's criminal career. This checklist has specific scoring criteria rating 20 items on a 3-point scale corresponding to the extent that it applies to a given individual. With the psychopathic behaviours identified by Hare's PCL-R, it can be implied that Gacy would score above 30 on this scale and therefore be considered a Gacy is considered to be America's most coldblooded killer. What the world viewed him as before being arrested and convicted of his heinous acts was a successful businessman; a social pillar in his community; volunteer; an active member of the Jaycee's; an ethical man; a man of stature; a good father and family man. Joining the "Jolly Jokers" in 1975, he created his character "Pogo the Clown" (A in order to attend numerous parties and charitable events. This creation of Pogo is what gave him the name "Killer Clown" by the media and public when As Dr. Michael Stone discusses during the documentary, "Most Evil - Cold Blooded Killers", he places Gacy at level 22 on the scale of measuring evil. The only other serial killer to score this high according to the aforementioned documentary was Tommy Sells (Stone, 2006). Gacy was found guilty and sentenced to death for the murder of 33 teenage boys and young men between 1972 and 1978. The majority of the bodies (25+) were buried in the crawl space of his home at 8213 West Summerside Avenue in Chicago (Decoeur, 1998). He would utilize some of his employees and a former roommate to help dig the "graves" for these victims by enticing them to believing they were digging "drainage lines". Bluebeard Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Bluebeard - Essay Example The plot of the story in the three versions has not changed significantly, although a few differences can be seen in the three stories. For instance, in the story of Mr. Fox, the bride is in love with the man and chooses to go and live with him, although she had many other suitors. In the other two versions, the brides did not voluntarily choose to get married to the man. In Fitcherââ¬â¢s Bird, for example, the ladies would be magically thrown into the poor beggarââ¬â¢s basket when they shook hands, while the young girl in The Robber Bridegroom was married off to the man by her father. Another difference was noted in the characteristics of the bridegroom. Both Mr. Fox and the wizard disguised as a poor beggar were rich and lived in fine houses. The wizard provided the bride with everything that she wished for in terms of material wealth. However, it was on condition that she was not to enter into a special room where he had killed and butchered his previous wives. Unlike the other bridegrooms, the wizard appears to be genuinely looking for a wife because he tells the youngest sister that she has passed the test and would now become his bride. The robber, on the other hand, lived in an eerie house deep in the forest, where he and his friends would take young girls and eat them. Just like Mr. Fox, it is clear he was not interested in having a wife at all. Some aspects of the original story have also changed significantly. The demise of the evil bridegroom is different in most stories although some of them are almost similar such as the story of Mr. Fox and The Robber Bridegroom. The brides discover their inhumane deeds and tactfully report them in front of the guests by pretending that they saw them in their dreams. The use of riddles and figurative language is a common feature in most stories as it makes the story more interesting. It was also commonly used in normal speech among the people during the time when the stories were written. Fairy tales
